I like this you tube video format much better then the youtube player, but for some reason I can play it on the internet, but my insignia infocast refuses to display the widget as an option.

Any Problems with SearchTube? I noticed a suprising sudden increase of the number of ratings for SearchTube within the last 4 days. The increase is a) much higher than in a comparable amount of time before and b) much higher than for other comparable widgets. Unfortunately, the ratings are bad, so SearchTube decreased quickly from Nr. 2 of the Highest rated widgets to Nr. 7. I haven't changed the widget for quite a while, and I don't see any difference in the behaviour of it on my ony Chumby one. Is there a new device out there which shows SearchTube in its widget-gallery, but on which ST doesn't run in a satisfying manner or which has a better YouTube widget ? Please help, my vanity is severely wounded !

Adding a video to your favorites might currently fail (without error message) because google's appengine is in read-only mode. Sorry for that . Latest info on http://code.google.com/status/appengine. This situation will typically only last for a few hours.

SONY DASH. THIS WIDGET IS NOT INTENDED TO BE RUN ON A SONY DASH. The Dash already has good YouTube support. You should not see it in the Dash's widget gallery.

@spoffinator: Thank you very, very much for your reply! I hope you'll get your Chumby repaired soon and then have more fun with it (and this widget)!

@Ratzfatz: Thanks for the quick response. I have removed the file as directed, and the issue still persists. As I mentioned earlier, it may just be coincidental, but not knowing what the script did, and it being the last change to the Chumby before the issue, it was the most likely candidate. I can assure others, that even after a deleting the file, a factory reset, I still have problems so it is likely a problem with my Chumby. I am currently working with support to resolve this. As for the rating, I tried to withdraw it completely, which is why it went to zero. I can't honestly provide a meaningful rating at all, as my Chumby is crashing every time I use the widget. Whilst I now know that this is not your fault, I have to choose a rating. I will give you the maximum, only because others who are successfully using the widget report it to be a great widget. Cheers Spoff

@blablabla343: What do you mean by "skipping, audio & video"? Have you installed the helper-script to make the videos faster as described above ?

  • blahblah343

Every video I play seems to be skipping, audio & video. Might want to look into this

@spoffinator: It is absolutely impossible that this "patch" has any influence on any of your other widgets . It just creates a small textfile /psp/cgi-bin/srchtube.txt on your chumby. The presence of the file cannot harm anything or anyone, but the SearchTube-widget can use it if it is there, while it cannot use it if it is not there. You can get rid of it by deleting it: follow the instructions here [[http://wiki.chumby.com/mediawiki/index.php/Chumby_tricks#Hidden_screen_in_Control_Panel]] to log into your chumby. Then type rm /psp/cgi-bin/srchtube.txt I assure you, that your problems are NOT related to this file. Please convince yourself! And if you're fair, please come back and think about your 0-points rating.

  • spoffinator

    April 7, 2010

After I installed the patch for this widget, my other widgets stop working after a short period of time, and only a reboot will fix it. Some of my streams no longer work, but I'm not sure if this is all related. How do I undo what the patch has done?

  • Ratzfatz

    April 3, 2010

Update: 1) Account for recent YouTube-API-change, which caused the error "invalid parameters.&errorcode=2&s" for some videos. This should be fixed now. 2) Videos in "My Favorites" that could not play, could not be removed from the favorites. Fixed now. If a video cannot play (e.g. due to copyright restrictions (like the recent UMG-case)) you get a better error message and the option to remove the video from the favs. 3) Progress-Bar for the impatients among us ;-)

Ratzfatz-san, Thank you for the information! Now I can play continously. Me and my family are enjoying a lot on this widget. If possible, hope you could add the function to sort the video as "latest", so each time I access, I could see the new ones. But anyhow, its very happy to have this widget on chumby. Thank you for the work!!

I just read that the Google App Engine still has problems (http://code.google.com/status/appengine) and is in read-only mode. That means, SearchTube will temporarily not be able to store additional favorites. Sorry for that.

  • Leeep

    February 24, 2010

    Ratzfatz, that did it, thanks!

  • Ratzfatz

    February 24, 2010

Leeep, sorry to hear that it doesn't work for you. You should save the file WITHOUT an extension: the filename must be "debugchumby", NOT "debugchumby.txt", NOT "debugchumby.mht" or anything like that. You may simply do a RIGHT-click on the link above and then chose "save link as.." to save the file without extension. If you have already saved the file WITH an extension, you may RENAME the file and delete the .txt. If the ".txt" is not shown, change the folder options in the windows (file-)explorer, so that file-extensions are shown for known-filetypes. Or you may use "firefox" instead of Internet Explorer, which saves the file correctly, no matter how you click on it.

  • Leeep

    February 24, 2010

this debugchumby file doesn't seem to be working for me. What should I save the file as? It opens in IE, when I do "save as", the file extension is .mht. I also tried using notepad to save it as a .txt file.

  • Ratzfatz

    February 24, 2010

O.k., seems like it's working again.

  • Ratzfatz

    February 24, 2010

Your Favorites (and the volume setting) are hosted at a Google Appengine Service, which is currently "temporarily down" (see http://code.google.com/status/appengine). That means you currently cannot access your favorites. I hope it doesn't take too long... Sorry for that.

    February 24, 2010

This is by far my young daughter favorite widget. As she's only 2, she struggle a bit, and end up clicking the back button rather than the 3rd video in the list. Apart from that especially since the introduction of favorites it is just perfect.

I love and am astonished with how you made the widget. I really like the things you added. Sadly, we started having a problem with the lip sync. It is about 2-3 seconds behind. (We see the picture before we hear the sound.)

  • Ratzfatz

    February 22, 2010

To START CONTINUOUS-mode: Play the first video; tap the screen; Press the "Continuous" button. To STOP CONTINUOUS-mode, stop the current video (press the stop-button). To SKIP A VIDEO in continuous-mode: press the "Skip Video" button.

  • Ratzfatz

    February 20, 2010

O.k., continuous playing is on the todo-list, right after the favorites. Hope that'll make you happier!

  • okuda

    February 20, 2010

Very nice widget. I'd be more happy if it could play the next video continuously based on what I've searched. Also, happy if it could correspond to "Youtube disco"! so I could play the videos continuously without touching it.

  • Ratzfatz

    February 19, 2010

You asked: "how do I know if it is really updated?"... I assume, you're referring to the "debugchumby"-download to make the videos faster ?? Well, If the update was successful, you a) DON't see the reminder anymore, that advises you to make the download, b) you WILL see that the videos play faster (smoother, i.e more frames per second) and c) you WON't see the "YouTube"-logo in the lower right corner anymore (when a video plays)

    February 4, 2010

@anatmavada: volume knob for classic and fast-forward fast-backward controls will be coming, but the buffering is out of my reach: the video is played by the Youtube chromeless player, which doesn't offer any buffering options as far as I know. Have fun!

  • anatmavada

    February 3, 2010

Great Widget Ratzfats, but I'm really need 60 to 120 second buffer and a volume knob for my classic Chumby. Can you please implement this. You are the men!

  • mrpchastant

    February 3, 2010

I just wanted to say that I LOVE this widget! To anyone that has lag, just let it sit and buffer for a minute or two, that's what I do and it becomes smooth.

  • karlkloss

    February 1, 2010

I'm somewhat pissed. I've just organized a copy of Adobe Flash and some beginner's books, and was ready to start learning Flash, because I wanted to have such an app, and now you come up with this complete widget ;-))) Nice work.

  • Obnates

    February 1, 2010

Ratzfatz -- I thought it might have something to do with my internet, but my Chumby gets 4 bars of wireless and the videos (once they actually start playing) usually run pretty smoothly, so I'm not sure what's going on. Overall, though, I'm not angry at all -- I've been waiting for a widget like this, so I'm pretty flexible if it's a little bumpy.

  • Ratzfatz

    February 1, 2010

Slow Framerate: I'm planning to add (optional) support for an installed mplayer in upcoming versions. I.e. SearchTube will make use of mplayer if it was properly installed (and some security restrictions were disabled [which I strongly discourage you to do]). I read about mplayer in the chumby-forum some times, and according to these posts, this should boost the framerate.

  • Ratzfatz

    February 1, 2010

@Obnates: I added this error message as reaction to your first comment. It seems like your Internet-connection is a bit unstable, at the moment I have no workaround for that problem, but I will work on that .... Hope it doesn't make you too angry.

  • Ratzfatz

    February 1, 2010

@guizzy: I also thought that maybe the horrible slow framerate of the videos prevented people from doing this. And I still wonder why noone complains about that ? Well, if that doesn't disturb you too much, just have fun.

  • guizzy

    January 31, 2010

I was beginning to think the only reason no one made a widget like this before was because of a technical limitation of the Chumby, but you made it happen. Great job!

  • Obnates

    January 31, 2010

Ratzfatz -- I got the white screen again. This time it finally ends with an error that says the embedded video played won't work. This happened in both a video and the search results.

  • brian6330

    January 31, 2010

It's a nice widget, but we are missing a volume control for the Chumby classic (in the widget) and a bigger buffer (30 seconds or more), because we have a unreliable internet connection.

  • Malaoshi

    January 31, 2010

Great - like it a lot. I guess that's what everybody was waiting for. How about a playlist function? So maybe all the search results play one after another?

  • Ratzfatz

    January 31, 2010

Thanks for your comments! The weird search-order will be corrected in the next update (tomorrow?; actually done already, but not yet uploaded). I will also try to fix the white-screen and make the widget "cooperative", so that you don't have to make it "stay" in the control panel.

  • Obnates

    January 30, 2010

Also, how are the search results generated? My wife was playing with this earlier, and searched for "Psych", the show on USA Networks. A search on YouTube itself pulls up a bunch of clips of the show/ads for the show, but the search results on this widget are very, very different (and quite shocking).

  • Obnates

    January 30, 2010

Great widget; it's about time someone came out with something like this. That said, I noticed a problem several times. Sometimes, after watching a video and returning to the search results, the next video I select just takes me to a white screen. I thought it might just be loading it, but I left it sit there for awhile and nothing happened. This has occurred several times so far.
