Chumby Updates back to topics
Why does my chumby need updating?

We're continually working on the chumby to take advantage of technological improvements. Occasionally you'll be notified that there's an update available for your chumby. The updates keep your chumby in tip-top shape so we recommend that you install them whenever you're asked. If you postpone updates and tell your chumby to remind you'll later, you'll get a notice every hour until you install the updates. We wouldn't ask you to do them if we didn't think they were good for your chumby!
The normal update installation process occurs via your wi-fi connection ("over the air") during which your chumby will automatically reboot twice. The update process will take anywhere from 10 to 20 minutes, depending on your bandwidth. We recommend that you not do bandwidth-intensive activities on your computer (like downloading large files) during the update.
You can find the latest software update and release notes at Software Updates.
I'm trying to update from a USB flash drive — why is the "Install from usb flash drive" button not available?
- The USB flash drive must be formatted FAT16 or FAT32 in order for it to work with the chumby. (As long as you haven't formatted the dongle HFS on a Macintosh, the USB flash drive should work.)
- During the update process, make sure there is nothing else plugged into the other USB port.
- When you unzip the software update onto your usb flash drive, make sure the folders "update1" and "update2" are at the top level (not inside of any other folders).

Will doing a software update wipe out any of my personal settings?
Installing over-the-air updates will not overwrite any of your personal settings. However, doing software updates from a USB flash drive will overwrite your personal settings so you'll need to re-enter information like your time zone, alarm settings, network settings, etc.
