How do I set up my wireless connection?

If this is the first time you've tried to connect your chumby to the Internet, go to Connecting to the Internet - First Time.

If this isn't the first time, go to Connecting to the Internet.

Why can't I connect to an access point?

  • Make sure your network's wireless access point, gateway, or router is powered on.
  • If your wireless connection is encrypted you'll need to find out what the passphrase is.
  • Make sure your router is broadcasting an SSID (wireless network name). If it isn't you'll need to manually enter an access point.
  • If you're on the "Network connection failed" screen, tap BACK and try that step again. It won't always connect the first time, so repeat that step a few times if necessary.
  • Try turning your chumby off and turning it back on again. Your chumby always tries to locate network connections during start-up.
  • Move your chumby closer to the access point (or your access point closer to your chumby) to see if it improves the signal strength.
  • If your access point has MAC address filtering enabled, you'll need to provide your chumby's MAC address to your access point. Learn about MAC address filtering.

Why does my chumby keep losing its connection?

  • Move your chumby closer to the access point (or your access point closer to your chumby) to see if it improves the signal strength.
  • Other wireless devices (like cordless phones) can interfere with the signal; try moving them to a different location.

My wireless network is open and requires no password, so why can't my chumby find it?

  • Try turning your chumby off and then back on a few times. Your chumby always tries to locate network connections during start-up and rebooting might solve the problem.
  • Move your chumby closer to the access point (or your access point closer to your chumby) to see if it improves the signal strength.
  • Other wireless devices (like cordless phones) can interfere with the signal; try moving them to a different location.

How do I reconnect my chumby to the network?

If you've previously set up a connection that you want to use, squeeze the top of the chumby to open the control panel, tap SETTINGS, tap NETWORK, choose "use an existing connection" and then tap OK. You'll see a list of connections you've set up. Complete details are at Existing Connection.

My chumby couldn't connect and is showing me a message. What does it mean?

If you get the "Network connection failed" screen, the first thing you should always try is to tap BACK to return to the "Confirm settings" screen and then tap OK to have the chumby try to connect again. Sometimes it can take a couple of tries to connect.

If you continue to get any of the messages below, go to Connection Troubleshooting for details.

  • chumby.com is unreachable
  • failed to obtain IP address
  • rausb0 interface down — rausb0 link is down
  • no network configuration

Which routers does the chumby work with?

Go to Tested Routers for the list of access points that the chumby has been tested on.

Can I use my chumby at the office?

Many workplaces have network security systems that are complex and may prevent wireless devices like the chumby from connecting. If the wireless security is anything other than WEP, WPA personal or WPA2 personal the chumby won't work. Talk to your network administrator if you're thinking about getting a chumby to use at work.

How do I know what encryption method is being used?

You'll need to refer to the user's guide that came with your router. If encryption is being used, the chumby attempts to automatically determine the encryption method.

How am I supposed to enter my WEP password if the keyboard doesn't go past the letter F?

WEP passwords must be entered in HEX format, which is why the keyboard only supports 0-9 and A-F. Full alphanumeric passwords are not supported for WEP, but it is for WPA. WEP passwords are not case sensitive.

Why is my WEP password not working?

Some wireless routers are set up so they let you use a "simple" WEP password that's easy to remember, but behind the scenes, it actually converts the "simple" password into a longer combination of characters — technically speaking, the password is being translated from "ASCII" to "HEX".

Because router manufacturers use different methods to convert ASCII passwords to HEX passwords, the chumby cannot convert your password using any standard formula (since there is none). What can you do? Here are a few options you can try:

  • Check the manual that came with your wireless router to see how you can determine its HEX password.
  • Go to www.wepkey.com and enter your ASCII password into the WEP key converter to generate a HEX password; then see if that password will work on your chumby.
  • If you didn't set up your network, contact the person who did for assistance.
  • Contact our Customer Support team for additional help with your specific router.

What is a MAC address?

The MAC address is a unique hardware number assigned to your chumby. Learn about MAC address filtering.
