Connection Troubleshooting

try this first!

If you get the Network Connection Failed screen, the first thing you should always try is to tap Back to return to the Confirm Settings screen and then tap OK to have the chumby try to connect again. Sometimes it can take a couple of tries to connect.

network connection messages

These are some of the error messages you might see on your chumby.

chumby.com is unreachable
Your chumby is unable to access http://www.chumby.com. Try the following:

  • The access point that the chumby is connected to may not have proper Internet access to reach the chumby server. Check that other wired and wireless devices using this access point can successfully access the Internet.
  • MAC address filtering might be enabled. See Using MAC Address Filtering to learn more about it.
  • You might be using a wireless connection that requires you to accept an End User License Agreement before you can connect (this is common at hotels and certain wifi "hotspots"). Because the chumby does not have a web browser, you will not be able to "click-thru" and accept an agreement. The chumby will not work in this situation.
  • There may be a firewall rule or proxy that is preventing your chumby from accessing chumby.com. If you're trying to use your chumby at work, talk to your system administrator. If you're using your chumby at home, check your access point's documentation to see if it's set up to use a firewall rule or proxy.

failed to obtain IP address
Your chumby failed to lease an IP address from the DHCP server. Try the following:

  • You may have entered the wrong network key — go back and try entering the network key again.
  • Move your chumby closer to the access point (or your access point closer to the chumby) to see if it improves the signal strength.
  • Other wireless devices (like cordless phones) can interfere with the signal; try moving them to a different location.

rausb0 interface down — rausb0 link is down
The network interface failed to properly initialize. Try the following:

  • Press the power button on the back of the chumby to turn it off. Wait a couple seconds and then press it again to turn it back on. Repeat the network configuration steps.

no network configuration
No configuration is present (configuration was somehow lost or corrupted). Try the following:

  • Press the power button on the back of the chumby to turn it off. Wait a couple seconds and then press it again to turn it back on. Repeat the network configuration steps.
