software updates

chumby version 0.9 - alpha prototype only

Release Date: December 2006

We've released a software update that addresses many of the problems found in the earliest prototypes. We want to make sure that all chumbys are upgraded; otherwise they will eventually stop working.

Most chumby owners will be able to do updates over the air. Check which software version your chumby is running by squeezing the upper right corner of your chumby to bring up the control panel and then select Settings > Info. After "versions" you'll see "SW"; the number after that is the software version.

Note: You don't need to update if your chumby version shows "HW: 0.9.1 SW: 0.9.2. FW: 128".

What's new?

  • Updated wireless driver with support for 802.11G networks.
  • Improved overall networking stability.
  • MAC address of the wireless card now displayed under Settings > Network.
  • Upgraded Flash player to Flash Lite 2.1.
  • Improved Flash player stability (fixed memory leak).
  • Improved touchscreen, squeeze sensor and accelerometer stability. (Accelerometer not available in first-generation prototype chumbys.)
  • New default digital clock.
  • OTA software update and bittorrent client enhancements.
  • Special Options mode enhancements.
  • Added a Reload button to the control panel that will fetch the latest channel changes (also restarts the network if the connection had been lost).
  • Miscellaneous control panel UI changes.

Known issues

  • The chumby is unable to mount a new USB drive if it was booted with a different USB drive attached.
  • The control panel may be unresponsive after going to clock mode due to network failure. (You'll need to reboot the chumby.)
  • Leaving and returning to the widget selection screen on the website may cause widgets to disappear.
  • The chumby's left/right speaker balance and/or headphone output is reversed during audio playback.
  • The alarm may sound for only a few seconds before stopping.
  • The alarm triggers incorrectly if the chumby's time is changed. (You'll need to reset the alarm.)
  • Daylight Saving Time change is not reflected by the chumby's clock. In order for DST to take affect, the chumby must be rebooted or the time zone needs to be set.
  • The time reported by the control panel is 23 seconds faster than the time reported by the OS.
  • The default timezone shown is San Diego; if you're not on the network, any timezone selected will be ignored.
  • The chumby displays a black screen if the widget channel is loaded with no assigned widgets.
